A practical guide to 50 MCP servers: what they do, how to connect them, requirements and examples. Microsoft, development, data and automation.

50 MCP servers in 2026: what to connect and how to use them
On this page · 8 sections

Written by Mario Larrúa Vega · Documentation accessed October 24, 2026.

You install an MCP server to look up documentation. Then you add one for GitHub, one for the browser and another “just in case.” By the end, the agent can access half your desktop, and you are still manually copying the error you wanted to fix.

Finding servers is no longer the problem. Choosing those that provide useful context, understanding their permissions and checking that the agent uses them well is. A catalog of fifty names is of little help if they all end up described as “boosting your productivity.”

This guide brings together 50 MCP servers and integrations, prioritizing the Microsoft ecosystem while covering alternatives for other needs. Each entry takes you from “sounds interesting” to a concrete first trial.

Are these really the 50 most used?

There is no public, consistent ranking that proves active usage across all MCP servers. GitHub stars measure interest; package downloads may include a whole CLI, automated tests or repeat installations. Treating those figures as real users produces an eye-catching ranking and a weak conclusion.

The selection combines presence in public catalogs, maintainer documentation and maintenance, task variety and relevance to an AI analyst working with Microsoft. I assign no market shares or invented popularity positions: the numbers help locate entries. Reference servers and community projects are identified.

What MCP connects and what the model still does

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It standardizes communication between an AI client and a server offering tools, resources or prompts. It is not another model to choose: it gives the agent structured access to documentation, code or services.

01Your request“Inspect the test pipeline”
02VS Code + CopilotChooses an available tool
03MCP serverAzure DevOps
04Service + permissionsReturns authorized data
The model interprets the task; the server exposes tools; the service enforces access. The result returns to the agent.

The distinction matters. Microsoft Learn’s server supplies documentation; Azure MCP connects Azure tools. One helps explain how to configure a resource. The other can query that resource using your identity. Installing the first does not imply access to the second.

MCP architecture

Two connection paths, different requirements
ConnectionWhat you configureWhat you need
Remote · HTTPA publisher URL. Examples: Learn, GitHub, Notion.Network access and the documented authentication. A URL does not guarantee OAuth compatibility.
Local · stdioA command the client starts. Examples: Playwright, Filesystem.A local client plus Node.js, Python/uv or another required runtime. Some tools still call paid cloud APIs.
Guided / tenant-specificAn endpoint or connector created for your organization.Administrator setup, registered OAuth app or account-specific credentials. Follow that provider’s guide.

How to add your first server in VS Code and Copilot

Start with Microsoft Learn: it lets you check the connection using public documentation. Open the command palette, run MCP: Add Server, choose HTTP and paste the URL from its entry. Choose a configuration destination and verify an actual tool call.

For a local server, choose Command (stdio) and enter the entry’s command. The client starts the process; do not expect a chat interface when running it directly in a terminal. Install its required runtime first.

Add servers in VS Code

In current Copilot Global configuration, the usual file is ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json and the root object is mcpServers. VS Code’s .vscode/mcp.json format uses servers. These are different formats: renaming the file does not transform its contents. Portable configuration does not support VS Code input prompts either.

Portable format · example for Copilot Global

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "microsoft-learn": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

A local server in the same portable format

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "playwright": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@playwright/mcp@latest"
      ]
    }
  }
}

These are two separate examples. Merge their entries under one mcpServers object if you use both. On Windows, if npx cannot start directly, use command "cmd" with args ["/c", "npx", "-y", "@playwright/mcp@latest"].

Configuration reference ↗

The entries show launch commands and endpoints; they are not fifty executed installations or compatibility tests across every account. When administrator permissions, an OAuth app or a private endpoint are involved, the entry says so. In production, pin a reviewed version rather than always updating to latest.

The catalog: 50 MCP servers with a concrete trial

Search by product or task and filter by category. Open “Setup, requirements and source” to see how to connect each server. Replace YOUR_… paths and placeholders inside < > with your environment’s values. The prompts are suggested examples for your first trial.

Three workflows that make sense in a Microsoft environment

Azure: documentation, inventory and diagnostics. First ask Learn for the recommended configuration; use Azure MCP in read-only mode to compare it with the test subscription. The useful result is a documented difference between what should exist and what actually exists, with the affected resource identifiers.

Azure DevOps or GitHub plus Playwright: from issue to evidence. Ask the agent to read the reported failure, find the related change and reproduce the behavior in a test application. Before requesting a fix, check that the observation matches the original problem. You do not need both repository platforms connected if the work lives in only one.

Power BI: understand a measure before changing it. Connect to the specific model, list its tables and measures and ask for an explanation of its DAX and dependencies. Use the local server for Desktop or PBIP; consider the hosted server when the model is in Fabric and your environment supports it. A convincing explanation should be verifiable against the model and its results.

Where I would start, depending on the job
JobFirst combinationWhat to validate
Azure and operationsMicrosoft Learn + Azure MCPCan the agent identify the right subscription and return actual resource evidence?
Web developmentGitHub + Playwright; Context7 when library documentation is neededCan it relate a reported issue to a reproducible browser observation?
Power BI analysisLearn + Power BI Authoring, choosing hosted or localDoes it connect to the intended model and explain a measure correctly?
ResearchOne search tool + extraction when neededAre sources original, dated and sufficient to support the conclusion?
Automationn8n or Zapier, with a small set of actionsCan it find the right workflow and describe its inputs without triggering it?

What has changed recently in 2026

Azure MCP 3.0 was announced on October 14. To begin evaluating its tools, the official example uses version 3.0.0 and read-only mode. This is more concrete than granting broad access and trusting the prompt to prevent changes.

Azure MCP 3.0: official announcement

Cloudflare announced Skills support over MCP on October 10. The idea is to provide instructions alongside server capabilities, but it depends on the client implementing that extension. A server feature should not be presented as an experience automatically available in every assistant.

Skills over MCP in Cloudflare

Stripe has a dated authentication transition: its documentation sets November 30, 2026 as the migration deadline, with agent-key changes from December. It recommends OAuth for interactive connections. If reusing an old guide with a full-access secret key, review this transition before deploying it.

The cost missing from the installation command

An open-source server or one running on your machine does not make the model, database or API it uses free. Separate three types of usage: the model conversation, calls to the connected service and automation executions.

The amount of context returned to the agent matters too. A query returning hundreds of records can consume more than several small queries. A tool that fails three times before succeeding adds time, tokens and, depending on the service, extra usage. I would compare cost per accepted task.

That is why I would not turn this selection into a race to keep fifty servers active. I would start with two or three tied to a recurring task and expand only when a need appears that the current set cannot cover.

How to decide which ones to keep

My criterion as an AI analyst is straightforward: a connection deserves to stay if it improves a result I can verify and its access is proportionate to the task. A smooth demo proves neither.

A useful pilot needs evidence
MeasureHow to record itDecision
Task successUse the same 10 representative tasks with and without the server. Record correct results.Keep it if it improves the actual job, not just the demonstration.
Time and retriesRecord elapsed time, tool calls and failed attempts.Investigate repeated retries or unnecessary tool calls.
Total costAdd model usage, service/API usage and workflow charges.Compare cost per accepted result. Local transport does not imply free service.
Access and traceabilityRecord which identity, resources and tool outputs supported the result.Reject a setup whose access you cannot explain or revoke.

For a Microsoft-focused role, I would start with Learn and the server for the product where the work already lives: Azure, DevOps, Fabric or Power BI. I would add GitHub, Figma, a search tool or automation when it provides necessary data or an action. The advantage appears when the agent reaches the right information and you can verify what it did with it.

The catalog has fifty options. Your next project probably needs far fewer.
